Close-up of lateral dorsal mantle and fins of an adult S. officinalis. The strong 'zebra' pattern of the mantle ends at the point where the fins begin and a different patterning of white spots begins. Again note how the ventral mantle visible below the fins is devoid of patterning. This is known as counter shading and is often seen in cephalopods.
