The stellate ganglion dissected out of a Sthenoteuthis pteropus. Going from right to left is the first order axon coming from the brain and entering the stellate ganglion which is the dark and somewhat triangular tissue mass at the center. The numerous first order axons radiating out of the ganglion downward and to the left travel to various muscle groups in the mantle to control mantle muscle contractions. A scalpel blade is shown for size comparison.
