Eggs of L. forbesii close to the point of hatching. This picture illustrates a problem encountered with squid eggs in the laboratory as they undergo severe breakdown of the outer tunic layers of the eggs capsules. With the breakdown of this layer, the eggs begin to fall apart prematurely. Note that the egg capsules are attached to floating pieces of styrofoam to keep them suspended in the water.
