A live Vampire Squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) recently collected from the deep-sea (around 700 meters) off southern California (Pt. Conception) using a modified opening-closing tucker trawl with a thermally-insulated cod-end. The animal shows some evidence of skin damage. The lobed fins characteristic of this species are clearly visible. Note also the "velar filaments", which are modified dorsolateral arms, and the photophores. This photograph, taken on board a ship in a small aquarium, appears on the cover of the Journal of Experimental Biology 201(16), 1998.
