Eggs of the Pacific broad fin squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana. Each spherical swelling encloses a single developing egg. These egg strands have from 8-10 eggs per strand although this species can have from 2-12 eggs per strand. Cephalopod eggs swell in size over the course of development. The top two strands have just been laid, the third strand is about 7 days old, the next two strands are about 14-20 days old and the last strand is 21-28 days old and close to the hatching stage. Note the difference in size from the top to the bottom.
