This specimen of Sthenoteuthis pteropus was caught by squid-jig at night and placed in a holding tank on the deck of an oceanographic research ship. This species is known as the Orangeback squid because of a large light organ located near the head on the dorsal mantle. S. pteropus is an open ocean species and does not do well when placed in confinement. Fin and mantle tip damage is visible on this animal as white areas near the tail
