Macro photo of the living skin of O. vulgaris showing the individual tiny chromatophores, both black and yellow. Note the many and variably shaped units defined by slight darkenings in the skin. This is called a patch and groove arrangement. Look at image 910 to see this arrangement on the skin of an octopus in nature.
